DOXI -
Concept to Function
Amdocs stepped into a new and exciting realm of hardware for the smart home era, with a white labeled solution for the modem and router.
Project Objectives
-
create a sellable ui with an emphasis on ‘wow factor’.
-
Enable a friendly and easy to use interface.
At this point in time, all routers were based on very technical dashboards that were not accessible to the average user to control his network. -
Create a base for expending into a smart home control hub.
-
Not a service but a platform – future addons and services to be upsold ontop of the modem and router solution

What I did:
Got a 3 screen concept – Mobile only
Wow factor as main goal – Sales oriented, but still operational.
01
Preliminary research
Card design behavior was key, so research focused on what makes card design so appealing in apps like apple wallet, walt, tinder, Spotify and more.
From a functional perspective, several router and home management apps were looked at.
Outcomes:
Card design in good for focus in and focus out behavior. Best practice suggest up to 3 steps (home – select card – expand and show more info).
Router management systems – users are prone to use the app rarely. The usage incentives are – 1. fix problems 2. Monitor 3. Parental control over bandwidth distribution within the home.
02
Work structure
The taskforce included a product manager, sales manager, UX expert and graphic designer, development (frontend and backend).
Weekly work meetings were set for all and UX and product worked together on a daily basis (remotely).
03
UX process:
Setting the guidelines from a behavioral perspective – I started by defining the interaction structures to follow the demo. The goal was to create boundaries of creativity so the interaction model will be easily learnable and also coherent throughout the different flows.
Defining the begavioral patterns also enabled development to start working on a framework and in that minimize development investment later on.
Setting flows and Wireframes
The app main goal was to oversee and give a positive sense of control over the network. This was achieved by a prominent indication.
Following this was more behaviors like reviewing internet speeds, number of users online and household devices, if there are any treats identified.
Other flows included viewing and control of a user profile. Buying addons and so forth.
Onboarding
The onboarding process was complex as it included the connection of a physical device (the router itself) with the app. Design incorporated indications that both are working and connected and also troubleshooting.
The design also included onboarding processes for each flow with instructional data.

UI and UX comes together
One of the project main characteristics was a unified work between UI and UX in order to provide a meaningful product with a WOW factor, and abandon the waterfall method of UX giving guidelines to UI.
UI and UX were tested using evaluative methodology, on various functional scenarios, like screen functionality description and basic flows using usertesting.com
